Driver Charged with Texting While Driving in Fatal Crash

A woman in Newfane, New York, has been charged with texting while driving in an accident that caused the death of a bicyclist, according to police.

Officers charged 25-year-old Alicia Westgate with reckless operation of a vehicle, use of an electronic device while driving and failure to exercise due care in connection with an accident on July 16 that killed 68-year-old Richard Webb.

Webb was an avid bicyclist riding on a road in the town of Burt in Niagara County, when he was struck from behind by Westgate's vehicle.

The cause of the crash was driver inattention, according to the police report. Westgate is due to appear in court in relation to the charges on August 14.
