Kroger Sued Over Deceptive Labeling of 'Simple Truth' Chicken
The supermarket chain Kroger is facing a lawsuit alleging that the company engaged in deceptive marketing practices by labeling its "Simple Truth" store brand chicken as humanely raised.
The suit, filed Tuesday in Superior Court in Los Angeles County, was brought by a group of California consumers who claim that Kroger misled them by labeling its "Simple Truth" premium store brand of chicken as being raised humanely in a "cage free" environment.
The lawsuit claims that cage-free housing inside large buildings is the standard industry practice for broiler chickens. The chicken, produced by Perdue Farms, is subject to this and other standard industry practices, according to court documents.
The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status of the lawsuit.
